Charlottesville, Va. – The 15th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team returns to action this weekend at the 2015 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate tournament. The event will take place at the par-72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Club in Johnson City, Tenn. The three-day tournament gets underway Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday pairings and tee times will be determined after the first round concludes.

Virginia won the tournament in 2013 and placed sixth last year in a rain-shortened 36-hole affair. Last year former Cavalier Denny McCarthy paced the team with his second consecutive runner-up finish at the event. Sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) was 12th overall while participating as an individual.

The 15 teams competing at the event include five squads currently ranked in Golfweek’s latest poll: Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina (43), East Tennessee State (29), Furman, Kent State (37), Louisville, Missouri, Penn State (21), Tennessee, VCU, Villanova, Virginia (15), Virginia Tech and UNC Wilmington.

Virginia’s lineup will include Walker, juniors Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.), senior Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.) and freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.). Sophomore Connor Messick (Oak Hill, Va.) will compete as an individual.

Walker is ranked 27th in the latest Golfweek individual standings and leads the Cavaliers with a 71.67 stroke average while Bard is second at 72.50.

The Cavaliers will tee off at 10:10 a.m. and are paired with East Tennessee State and Kent State during the opening round.

Live scoring of the tournament will be online at Golfstat.com.
