Five Cavaliers Competed at Charlottesville Challenger Qualifying

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Five members of the Virginia men’s tennis team competed in qualifying singles of the $50,000 Charlottesvile Men’s Pro Challenger tournament, being held Oct. 31 through Nov. 8 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
In Saturday’s opening-round qualifying matches, junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Dmitriy Kamynin, but fell 6-4, 6-2 to Noah Rubin in Sunday’s second round.
Sophomore Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) faced Rubin in Saturday’s opening round, falling 6-3, 7-6 (2) to the world-ranked No. 533 player. Senior Jonathan Cornish (London, England) fell 6-4, 7-6 (5) to No. 935 Jarryd Chaplin. Redshirt junior Harrison Richmond (Pawley’s Island, S.C.) fell 6-2, 6-3 to No. 529 David Rice. Sophomore Alexander Ritschard (Zurich, Switzerland) dropped his match against No. 701 Peter Polansky, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
The five Cavaliers were among the 30 players in the qualifying tournament vying for four slots into the main draw singles. Round of 16 qualifying matches will be contested on Sunday, Nov. 1 with the four qualifying slots being decided on Monday, Nov. 2. Main draw singles begin on Monday, Nov. 2 with the finals being contested on Sunday, Nov. 8.
Wiersholm partnered with sophomore Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) to compete in doubles qualifying. The tandem were eliminated in a close 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 match against Reilly Opelka and Tommy Paul.
