Ritschard Wins A2 Singles Bracket at WFU Fall Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Three Virginia men’s tennis players competed this weekend at the Wake Forest Men’s Tennis Invitational, which ran Friday, Nov. 6 through Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Sophomore Alexander Ritschard (Zurich, Switzerland), the top seed in the A2 Singles bracket, bounced back from an opening set loss to Kentucky’s Nils Ellefsen in Sunday’s bracket championship match to win 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4. Ritschard logged a pair of wins on Friday, 7-6 (3), 6-2 over Adam Moundir of Old Dominion and 6-2, 6-3 over Indiana’s Antonio Cembellin, to move into Saturday’s semis where he logged a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Georgia State’s Jannis Koeke.
Senior Jonathan Cornish (London, England) played in Sunday’s B1 Singles bracket final, falling to Liberty’s Egon Samaii, 7-5, 6-4. Cornish logged a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Dartmouth’s Aman Agarwal in the semis on Saturday after wins on Friday over Georgia State’s Jack MacFarlane, 6-2, 7-6 (2), and Duke’s Dan McCall, 6-4, 6-2.
Redshirt junior Harrison Richmond (Pawley’s Island, S.C.) finished in fifth place in B2 Singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Campbell’s Lorenz Schwab on Sunday. Richmond opened play on Friday with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Georgia State’s Sebastian Acuna before falling 7-6 (5), 6-2 to Alexander Kokorev of Wisconsin later that afternoon. On Saturday, Richmond defeated UNC Greensboro’s Danny Mack 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Cornish and Richmond also partnered in doubles, but only played one match, falling Kentucky’s Nils Ellefsen and Kevin Lai 8-4 on Friday.
Players from 18 teams competed in Winston-Salem this weekend including Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Indiana, NC State, Liberty, Tennessee Tech, East Carolina, UNCG, Navy, Dartmouth, Penn, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Norfolk State and Old Dominion.
The tournament was scheduled to be played outdoors, but most matches were contested indoors because of the weather conditions.
