Feb. 11, 2016 – The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team (5-0) will be competing at the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Men’s Team Indoor Championship being held Feb. 12-15 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. Admission to the tournament is free.
The ITA National Indoors field includes the top-16 teams in the latest ITA rankings, including No. 1 Virginia, which faces No. 16 San Diego (4-1) on Friday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the opening round.
Dual matches are scheduled at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday with the championship match set for 11 a.m. on Monday. Each of the 16 teams is guaranteed three matches during the championship. Fans can attend the four-day championship free of charge.
The teams include 46 ranked players, including having 28 of the top-43 players in the nation competing this weekend. No. 2-ranked junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) is the top-ranked singles player in the tournament and is one of six players ranked in the top-10 who will be competing at the ITA Indoors. There are also 20 doubles teams from competing schools that are currently ranked, including three of the top four doubles teams in the country. Kwiatkowski and his partner senior Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) are currently ranked No. 4 and are one of UVA’s three ranked doubles teams.
Kwiatkowski improved to 17-1 in singles this season with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over UCLA’s Gage Brymer on Tuesday night in a warm-up for the ITA’s. Sophomore Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) improved to 5-0 with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Martin Redlicki at No. 3 singles. Junior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) improved to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in duals with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Logan Staggs.
The Cavaliers are 28-2 in singles and 12-3 in doubles in dual matches this season.
The ITA Division I National Men’s Team Indoor Championship dates back to 1973. Stanford owns the most ITA indoors titles with 12, followed by UCLA with seven and the host Cavaliers winning five of the last eight championships with its last title coming in 2013.
The Boar’s Head Sports Club has hosted the ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championship in 2010 and 2012 and hosted the Women’s National Team Indoor Championship from 2011 through 2015. Virginia won the team title in 2010 at the Boar’s Head.
