ANNAPOLIS, Md.-The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving team won four events on the first day of the ECAC Championships Friday (Feb. 26) in Annapolis, Md.

The Cavaliers started off the evening with a win the women’s 200-yard free relay. The foursome of sophomore Dina Rommel (East Amherst, N.Y.), freshman Eryn Eddy (Loveland, Colo.) and juniors Audrey Gould (Bethesda, Md.) and Katie Miller (Cranberry Township, Pa.) finished in a time of 1:33.45.

Senior Samantha James (Kenilworth, Ill.) won the women’s 500 free in a personal record time of 4:45.90, while sophomore Jessie Gvozdas (Henrico, Va.) was second in 4:45.90.

A pair of freshmen, Sara Stranick (Charlotte, N.C.) and Rachel Politi (Bexley, Ohio) went 1-2 in the women’s 200 IM in 2:01.84 and 2:02.50, respectively.

The women’s 400 medley relay of James, Stranick, freshman Peyton Baldwin (Newport News, Va.) and sophomore Laine Reed (Austin, Texas) touched first in 3:42.93.

Freshman Kirsten Parkinson (Stamford, Conn.) finished first in women’s 1-meter diving with an NCAA Zone-qualifying score of 281.65, which ranks fourth on UVA’s all-time list.

Rommel placed second in the women’s 50 free in 22.99, while senior Matheus Martini (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was second in the men’s 200 IM in 1:49.46.

In the men’s 500 free, senior Greg Stoffa (Manassas, Va.) finished fourth in 4:28.61.

The action at the ECAC Championships runs through Sunday.
