Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Virginia junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) picked up the first title of his career to lead the 24th ranked Cavalier men’s golf team at the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Stanger shot 9-under 207 and shared first-place honors with South Carolina’s Matthew NeSmith.

Virginia finished second overall in the 15-team field with a season-best score of 16-under 848. The Cavaliers shot 3-under 285 during Sunday’s final round.

South Carolina won with a score of 23-under 841. It marked the second time in a week the Gamecocks and Cavaliers finished first and second at the same tournament. South Carolina bettered Virginia at the Palmetto Intercollegiate earlier in the week. NeSmith won that event while Stanger produced a sixth-place finish.

Not only was Stanger’s finish the best of his career, his 9-under 207 was his lowest collegiate tournament score and his second-round 6-under 66 was his best 18-hole effort. Stanger and NeSmith’s scores were the second best 54-hole totals in the history of the tournament.

Sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) also produced a top-10 finish for UVA. He shot 3-under 213 and finished in ninth place. Junior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) tied for 27th place at 1-over 217 while senior Kyle Kochevar (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was 52nd at 224. Freshman Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.), who is competing as an individual, placed 64th at 229.

The Cavaliers return to action March 20-22 at the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga.
