With the call-up of #UVABase alum Jarrett Parker (2008-10) by the San Francisco Giants yesterday, there are now eight #UVABase alums playing in the Major Leagues, including three in the Bay Area, with Sean Doolittle (2005-07) pitching for the Oakland A’s in the East Bay and Javier Lopez (1996-98) toeing the rubber in front of Parker for the Giants at AT&T park on the opposite side of the San Francisco Bay. Prior to his promotion, Parker had seven hits last week for Triple-A Sacramento, but five of them were of the extra-base variety. He drove in runs in five straight games, homering in four of those. The outburst put Parker into a tie for the home run lead in the Pacific Coast League, and he’s tied for third in RBIs.
#UVAMGolf junior Derek Bard is already in the field for the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club (June 13-19) thanks to an exemption from his runner-up finish at last year’s U.S. Amateur Championship. He might have some company. Monday a pair of UVA golfers made it through local qualifying tournaments. Kyle Kochevar and Jimmy Stanger both advanced through their local tournaments. The sectional qualifying phase takes place June 6.
