Eugene, Ore. – The 15th ranked Virginia women’s golf team shot 2-under 286 during Sunday’s third round of play at the NCAA Championships to make the 15-team cut and advance to Monday’s fourth round of medal play.

On Monday the NCAA individual champion will be crowned and the top eight teams will advance to the match play portion of the tournament. Match play quarterfinals and semifinals will take place Tuesday and the finals will be held Wednesday.

UVA finished the third round of the tournament tied with No. 10 Arizona for eighth place at 9-over 873. The Cavaliers started Sunday’s play in 15th place but used their best round at the Eugene Country Club to move up the leaderboard.

“We are thrilled about making the first cut,” said Virginia coach Kim Lewellen. “Starting the day in 15th place, there was some pressure to play well and our team was excellent today. We are looking forward to playing the course again with the opportunity to advance to match play.”

UVA was led during the third round by senior Lauren Coughlin’s (Chesapeake, Va.) 4-under 68. The ACC individual champion birdied her final three holes to move into seventh place in stroke play at 4-under 212. Coughlin’s round was the third lowest by a UVA player in NCAA Championship play.

Junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) shot 2-under 70 and moved up to 58th place at 5-over 221. Senior Elizabeth Szokol and freshman Anna Redding both posted rounds of 2-over 74. Szokol is in 41st place at 219 while Redding is 70th at 222. Freshman Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) shot 75 and is in 96th place at 226.

UVA’s team score of 2-under 286 was the best single-round score against par a Cavalier squad has posted at the NCAA Championships.

Second-ranked USC continues to lead the 24-team field at 4-under 860. UCLA and Duke are tied for second at 862.

The Cavaliers will start the fourth round at 4:30 p.m. ET from the 10th hole. UVA will play with South Carolina and Arizona during the final round.

Monday’s play will be televised live by the Golf Channel starting at 7 p.m. ET.
