CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ââ’¬” The Virginia men’s soccer team announced its 2016 schedule Friday. Highlighted by 11 regular-season games on the home pitch at Klöckner Stadium, the 16-game schedule again is one of the most challenging in the nation, featuring seven opponents that competed in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

Led by 21st-year head coach George Gelnovatch, Virginia boasts an outstanding home schedule, including visits from five NCAA qualifiers from 2015 ââ’¬” Coastal Carolina in the season opener (Aug. 26), national runner-up Clemson (Sept. 17), Hofstra (Oct. 4), Radford (Oct. 11) and Notre Dame (Oct. 14). UVA also makes trips to face 2015 NCAA quarterfinalist Wake Forest (Sept. 10) and North Carolina (Oct. 7), which reached the round of 16 last year.

After opening the season against the Chanticleers, UVA remains home a week later to face Xavier (Sept. 2), which was 12-6-1 last year. The Cavaliers play at James Madison on Labor Day (Sept. 5), marking Virginia’s first trip to Harrisonburg since Sept. 25, 1991. UVA opens its eight-match ACC schedule Sept. 10 at Wake Forest.

UVA also has home matches on the docket against VCU (Sept. 14), Cornell (Sept. 27), Virginia Tech (Sept. 30), William & Mary (Oct. 18) and Duke (Oct. 28). The Cavaliers make their first-ever trip to Louisville on Sept. 24 and also visit Pitt on Oct. 21.

Virginia does not play Boston College, NC State or Syracuse in ACC action this year.

The ACC tournament will be contested Nov. 2-12, while the NCAA tournament begins Nov. 17 and culminates Dec. 9 and 11 with the NCAA College Cup at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.

Virginia has three preseason exhibition matches at Klöckner Stadium: Longwood (Aug. 13), Liberty (Aug. 16) and Georgetown (Aug. 20).

After reaching the second round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament, Virginia returns 18 letterwinners this season, including seven starters, while welcoming in a top five-ranked recruiting class. UVA has won seven national championships and 15 ACC titles and appeared in 35-consecutive NCAA tournaments ââ’¬” the longest current streak in the nation.
