CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s lacrosse team, along with two individual student-athletes, were recognized by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association as earning academic honors for the 2016 season.

The IWLCA recognized 94 schools to the Division I Academic Honor Squad. Each team that had a GPA of 3.0 or higher earned the honor. Virginia was one of seven teams from the ACC among the honorees.

Along with the team, recent graduate Sarah Gillespie (Medham, N.J.) and rising senior Katherine Rueger (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) were among the student-athletes from 96 different institutions to be included in the 2016 IWLCA/Zag Sports Division I Academic Honor Roll.

Last May, Gillespie graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Global Public Health. Rueger will return for her senior season in 2017 and is majoring in media studies.

All honored student-athletes achieved at least junior status academically and had a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater.
