CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 16 Virginia field hockey team (5-4, 1-1 ACC) closes out a two-game New England road trip by playing at Fairfield (1-7, 0-0 MAAC) on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 12 p.m. at University Field in Fairfield, Conn.

Sunday’s game will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Both teams are coming off 2-1 overtime contests this week. Fairfield lost a heartrbreaker in double overtime against Penn on Wednesday afternoon while the Cavaliers prevailed in single overtime at No. 9 Boston College on Friday evening.
Fairfield’s Caitlin Bennett recorded 10 saves in the cage off 24 Quakers’ shots. At the end of regulation, the Fairfield defense faced six consecutive penalty corners and was able to fend off each one to force the game into extra time, but Penn scored in the 94th minute to end the Stags’ upset bid.
At Boston College, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead over Virginia midway through the first period. The slim advantage held until 6:16 remaining in the game when senior Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) tied the game after driving into the circle, splitting a pair of defenders and smashing a shot past the goal keeper. BC started the overtime period with possession, but turned the ball over to the Cavaliers a minute into the extra time. UVA’s backline sent an outlet pass up to senior Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, England) on the far right sideline. Hyams raced passed the defense and into the circle, taking a blistering shot that went past the goalie to give the Cavaliers the victory.
It was the Cavaliers’ second overtime victory of the season after also defeating Rutgers in 1:29 of extra time in the opening weekend of the season.
The game was also UVA’s third-straight contest against a top-10 opponent. The Cavaliers went 2-1 in that stretch, topping Princeton and BC but falling to UConn.
Hyams now leads the team with nine points on two goals and five assists. Foust, senior Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) and junior Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) are all tied for the team’s goal-scoring lead with four apiece.
Sophomore goalie Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) is averaging 8.0 saves per game in her five starts this season in the cage.
The Cavaliers will be back home at Turf Field next weekend, hosting No. 14 Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m., and No. 17 Old Dominion on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all regular-season UVA home field hockey games.
