No. 16 Virginia Plays Host to Cornell Tuesday Night

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The No. 16 Virginia men’s soccer team starts a three-match homestand on Tuesday (Sept. 27) with a 7 p.m. game against Cornell at Klöckner Stadium.

Virginia-Cornell Series
Virginia and Cornell are playing for the first time in 20 years. UVA owns a 4-0 advantage in the all-time series, outscoring the Big Red 12-0 in those contests. They last played on Oct. 11, 1996, which was George Gelnovatch‘s first season as Virginia’s head coach. UVA prevailed, 5-0. Current UVA associate head coach Matt Chulis played the full 90 minutes for the Cavaliers in that win.

Cavaliers Gear Up for Glut of Home Matches
Playing in its 25th season at Klöckner Stadium, Virginia will stay home for the majority of its remaining schedule. The Cavaliers play seven of their final nine regular-season matches at home, including three straight over the next eight days. UVA is 2-0-2 at home this year and 259-52-21 in 25 years at Klöckner.

Busy Schedule for Hoos
Virginia started its busiest stretch of the season last Saturday at Louisville. Beginning with the Louisville contest, Virginia will play nine matches in a 28-day stretch. Including tonight, the Cavaliers have Tuesday non-conference matches slated for each of the next four weeks at home. Five of the nine games are against top-25 foes (Louisville, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Radford, Notre Dame).

Cavaliers Benefit from Deep Roster
Virginia has shown off its deep roster and a more aggressive attack this season, playing at least 17 men in each contest. UVA used 21 men in wins against Coastal Carolina and VCU. Defenders Robin Afamefuna and Sergi Nus and goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell have not stepped off the field this year. With 13 newcomers to the program, UVA has utilized six different starting lineups in its seven matches.

Salandy-Defour Makes Impact Upon Return
Making his season debut Sept. 17 after an offseason knee injury, senior forward Marcus Salandy-Defour created an immediate impact as UVA scored seven goals in his three matches. He was named the ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week last week after scoring a pair of goals against Clemson in his first career brace. He scored just 81 seconds into the Clemson match, the earliest goal by a UVA player since Aug. 31, 2007.

Noting Cornell
Members of the Ivy League, Cornell has not played since dropping a 3-1 decision to then-No. 2 Syracuse at home last Tuesday. Cornell held a 1-0 lead late in the first half in that match. The Big Red is led in scoring by George Pedlow and Brady Dickens with two goals each. Cornell has been outscored 18-7 in eight matches this season.
