CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The No. 17 Virginia men’s soccer team opens postseason play at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 2) when it plays host to North Carolina State in the first round of the ACC tournament at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia is the tournament’s 6-seed, while NC State is seeded 11th.

Ticket Information
Tickets for the first-round ACC tournament match are $9 for reserved seats, $7 for adults and $5 for youth/seniors. UVA and NC State students receive free admission with valid ID. There will be no Faculty/Staff rate for this event.

Fans can order tickets online at VirginiaSports.com and by phone through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office at 800-542-UVA1 (8821) or 434-924-UVA1 (8821). Tickets are also available at the Klöckner Stadium box office beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Gates will open at 6 p.m.

Noting the ACC Tournament
The advancing team from the UVA-NCSU match moves on to play No. 3 seed Louisville in a quarterfinal game at 1 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 6) at Louisville’s Lynn Stadium.

The semifinals will be held next Wednesday (Nov. 9) at the home sites of the higher seeded teams, while the championship match will be contested Sunday, Nov. 13, in Charleston, S.C.

Virginia-NC State Series
Virginia holds a 47-17-8 edge in its all-time series with NC State. The teams did not play in the 2016 regular season. UVA is 10-1-2 against NC State since 2004 and is unbeaten in its last 18 home matches against the Wolfpack, dating to an NCSU triumph in 1980.

UVA scored a 1-0 win over the Wolfpack in the teams’ last meeting on Sept. 20, 2015, at Klöckner Stadium.

Virginia is playing NC State in the ACC tournament for the first time since the Cavaliers’ 1-0 win in the 2009 championship match. The Cavaliers are 4-1-1 all-time against NC State in the ACC tournament.

UVA Looks to Remain Unbeaten at Home
Virginia finished unbeaten (7-0-4) on its home pitch at Klöckner Stadium in the regular season and is now unbeaten in 14 straight home matches dating to 2015. UVA has outscored its opponents 20-6 at home this year. Now in its 73rd year of men’s soccer, Virginia is playing its 25th season of soccer at Klöckner Stadium. UVA has a 264-52-24 record at the facility.

Gelnovatch Approaches UVA Career Wins Record
Now in his 20th year, UVA head coach George Gelnovatch is two wins shy of the career wins record at Virginia. Gelnovatch owns 293 career wins, two fewer than his predecessor, Bruce Arena, who won 295 matches from 1978-95. Gelnovatch played for Arena from 1983-86 and was an assistant coach on Arena’s staff from 1989-95.

Gelnovatch has won at least 10 games in each of his previous 19 seasons and has a career record of 293-119-49.

Stingy Defense
Since allowing six goals on Sept. 24 at Louisville, Virginia has conceded only twice as UVA has gone on an nine-match unbeaten streak. UVA has not been scored on in its last four matches, dating to an 82nd-minute penalty kick on Oct. 11 against Radford (408 total minutes).

Since the Louisville match, UVA has outscored its foes 13-2 while going 6-0-3, its longest unbeaten streak since 2013.

Caldwell Strong in Goal
Jeff Caldwell is having a standout junior season in goal, with eight shutouts in 16 matches. Now with 16 career shutouts, Caldwell is tied with Diego Restrepo (2009) for sixth in program history, one shy of fifth. His 0.90 career goals-against average currently ranks seventh in the university’s all-time annals. He also stands eighth in program history with 128 saves.

Noting NC State
NC State dropped its ACC regular-season finale on Saturday at Boston College, falling 5-4 in overtime with the golden goal coming on an own goal in the 95th minute. Julius Duchscherer owns nine of NC State’s 25 goals this year, and he also has four assists. Tanner Roberts has scored four goals, including a pair in the loss at BC.
