CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball (1-0) finishes its opening homestand by hosting Coppin State (0-1) on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
All of the 2016-17 Virginia women’s basketball games – home and away – are available locally on NewsRadio 1070 AM and 98.9 FM WINA with Channing Poole calling the action. Live stats will also be available through Gametracker on VirginiaSports.com and the Virginia Gameday Live app.
The Cavaliers opened the season on Friday night with a 63-51 victory over Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders held a 14-11 advantage after the first period, but UVA outscored MTSU 22-7 in the second quarter to take control of the game.
Four Cavalier first-years made their collegiate debuts in the game with the freshmen accounting for 37 of Virginia’s 63 points. Freshmen guards Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) were both in the starting lineup, with Toussaint pacing the team in scoring with 16 points and Willoughby leading the team in rebounding with nine boards. Felicia Aiyeotan (Lagos, Nigeria) came off the bench to play nine minutes, recording four blocked shots in that time. It was the most blocked shots by a Cavalier since Sarah Imovbioh had four in a game against N.C. State on Feb. 28, 2013.
Coppin State also opened its season on Friday, falling 73-44 on Friday afternoon at VCU. Senior guard Keena Samuels finished with a team-high 11 points, with five of those points coming in the fourth quarter. Freshman Chance Graham grabbed 11 rebounds in her collegiate debut.
Virginia is 4-0 all-time against the Eagles. Last year, the two teams met in the first game of the Cavalier Classic Tournament, with UVA picking up a 75-40 victory.
