CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (7-2, 0-0 ACC) plays at Georgia (7-3, 0-0 SEC) on Monday, December 19 at 7 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga.
The game will be televised nationally on the SEC Network. All of the 2016-17 Virginia women’s basketball games – home and away – are available locally on NewsRadio 1070 AM and 98.9 FM WINA with Luke Neer and Chelsea Shine-Wilson calling Monday’s action. The game will also stream live online as an SEC Network + contest.
Virginia returned from an 11-day exam break with a 76-39 win over UIC on Friday at John Paul Jones Arena, the first time holding an opponent to under 40 points since a 68-39 victory over Bowling Green on Dec. 8, 2015. Virginia currently leads the ACC in scoring defense, allowing opponents to score just 52.6 points per game.
Freshman center Felicia Aiyeotan (Lagos, Nigeria) scored 16 points in 16 minutes in the game on the 16th vs. UIC. Aiyeotan made her first seven field goal attempts against UIC and finished the game going 8-of-9 (.889) of the field, surpassing her previous best-shooting game when she went 10-of-12 (.833) against Coppin State. Aiyeotan’s 88.9 percent shooting percentage is tied for the second-best shooting game in the ACC this season, eclipsed only by a 12-of-13 performance by Notre Dame’s Arike Ogunbowale against Central Michigan. Aiyeotan is tied with Miami’s Erykah Davenport for the conference lead in shooting percentage, with both making 68.3 percent of their attempts
Senior guard Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va.) has scored 16 points in each of the last two games, going a combined 13-of-18 (72.2 percent) from the field. Mason currently ranks third in the ACC in three-point shooting percentage (.467).
Junior guard Aliyah Huland El (Randolph, N.J.) was 4-of-6 from three-point range against UIC, her second time this season hitting four treys in a game. Huland El also grabbed a season-high seven rebounds in the game.
Sophomore forward Moné Jones (Durham, N.C.) made her season debut on Friday night. Jones missed the first eight games of the season recovering from a leg injury. She played 12 minutes against the Flames, scoring three points.
Georgia returned from its finals break with a 51-48 road win at Cincinnati. Pachis Roberts scored 14 points with eight rebounds and six steals, playing all 40 minutes in the victory. Caliya Robinson leads the team in scoring, averaging 17.8 points per game. Robinson has scored in double figures in 13-straight games. Roberts paces the squad in rebounding at 7.6 per game.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two teams with the series tied 2-2. Virginia will be looking for its first-ever win in Athens, going 0-2 all-time on the road against the Lady Bulldogs. The two teams last met on Dec. 20, 2009 with Georgia picking up a 69-53 victory in Athens. Georgia is 5-0 at home this season.
The Cavaliers return to John Paul Jones Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 21, hosting Maryland Eastern Shore at 7 p.m.
