CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (15-8, 4-8 ACC) plays at No. 16 Miami (17-6, 6-5 ACC) on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
All of the 2016-17 Virginia women’s basketball games – home and away – are available locally on the radio on NewsRadio 1070 AM and 98.9 FM WINA with Channing Poole providing the play-by-play. The game will also stream live online as an ACC Network Extra game.
Miami will be the fourth ranked team that UVA has faced in the last five games, including a 70-51 loss to No. 15 Duke on Sunday. It was just the third time this season that a Virginia opponent scored 70 or more points in a game.
Freshman guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) was the only Cavalier to score in double figures against Duke, contributing 10 points. Toussaint also led the team with 16 points against Georgia Tech.
Toussaint was named the ACC Rookie of the Week on Monday, the second-straight week a Cavalier has earned the honor after Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) did so the week before. A freshman has led the Cavaliers in scoring in five of the last six games with Toussaint doing so three times and Willoughby leading in the other two. The four Virginia first-years are combining to score an average of 27.2 points per game, which is 41.4 percent of UVA’s total offense. The freshmen also combine to grab 15.8 rebounds per game, 40.8 percent of UVA’s rebounding total.
Senior guard Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va.) comes into the game with 972 career points, 28 points shy of becoming the 32nd member of UVA’s 1,000-career point club. Mason is averaging 13.3 points per game in her last four games. She is fifth in the ACC in three-point shooting percentage, making 42.4 percent of her attempts. She has made at least one three pointer in each of the last five games.
Virginia leads the all-time series 9-7 and is 7-6 in ACC games, but Miami has won six of the last nine contests. Last season, the Cavaliers opened up the conference slate with a 76-56 victory over No. 22 Miami.
Virginia is second in the ACC in field goal percentage defense (35.5 percent) while Miami is fourth in field goal shooting efficiency, making 44.3 percent of its shots. Virginia leads the ACC in three-point shooting defense (26.2 percent), while Miami is fourth in the ACC in three-point shooting efficiency (36.8 percent).
Virginia returns to John Paul Jones Arena on Sunday, Feb. 12 to host Wake Forest in a 2 p.m. game, the first of three remaining regular-season home games for the Cavaliers.
