Basketball is Family

One of #UVAWBB head coach Joanne Boyle’s former players at Cal has been diagnosed with breast cancer. This feature story from the Associated Press’ Janie McCauley tells how Boyle and UVA’s associate athletics director for WBB Ops Sarah Holsinger teamed up with Cal’s former WBB athletic trainer to try to make a difference and help with her recovery.

Also under that same header of “Basketball is Family”, we share this piece about former #UVAWBB guard Lexie Gerson. Gerson, after two years of playing progessionally in Israel, is in her first season as an assistant coach at NCAA III Arcadia University. In this article from OutSports, Gerson talks about the “loving, genuine, and judgement-free zone” she experienced and helped to create in her teams at UVA.

Virginia men’s lacrosse has two student-athletes that won gold for Team USA in the U19 games last summer. Freshman Dox Aitken and sophomore Ryan Conrad. Both were instrumental in UVA’s win at then-No. 6 Loyola over the weekend, scoring a combined seven goals. Aitken led UVA with four goals.  Conrad scored the game-winning goal with 2:17 left. We are going to close out the Valentine’s Day edition of the blog with our favorite Tweet of the year (so far, though it is going to be really hard to top this one). Congratulations to former #UVABase pitcher and current Oakland A’s closer Sean Doolittle and his nowfiance Eirann Dolan. The proposal came last week, but we saved it to share until today. Happy Valentines Day (and MLB Pitchers and Catchers Report Day) to you both!
