Virginia opened the 2017 season with a loss to Elon, 11-10. The Cavaliers had a balanced offensive attack to comeback from down three goals to tie the game with six minutes left, but a final second goal for Elon ended the game.

Senior Besser Dyson (Alexandria, Va.) led UVA with two goals and two assists. Senior Kelly Reese (Severna Park, Md.) and junior Kasey Behr (North Port, N.Y.) each had two goals. Four players scored one goal apiece in the game.

The Cavaliers are receiving votes in this week’s polls. It is the first time since the IWLCA Poll’s inception that Virginia has not been ranked in the top-20, breaking a streak 298-straight appearances, the only program in the NCAA to do so.

Wednesday’s game will be the 41st meeting all-time between the two teams. Virginia holds a 36-3-1 lead in the overall series and is 15-2-1 in games played at Richmond. The Cavaliers have won nine-straight against the Spiders, including an 18-12 win in 2016. The last time the two teams met in Richmond was Feb. 20, 2013, with UVA winning13-7.

Richmond won its season opener on Feb. 18, with an 18-7 victory over Liberty. The Spiders had seven different players score, led by Natalia Chaney with five goals. Marissa Brown had two goals and dished eight assists to lead the team in points. Goalkeeper Megan Gianforte allowed just seven goals and made eight saves in the opener.

Virginia will return home on Saturday, Feb. 25 to host Princeton. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.
