CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s lacrosse team (12-8) continues play in the 2017 NCAA Championship against 2-seed North Carolina (16-2) in a second-round matchup on Sunday (May 14) at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra and can be viewed through ESPN3 or the WatchESPN app. Links for the stream, as well as live stats, are available on VirginiaSports.com.

Virginia advanced past Elon with an 11-9 win on Friday afternoon in the first round. The Cavaliers opened the game with a 4-0 run and never trailed in the win. Sophomores Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.) and Avery Shoemaker (Wyndmoor, Pa.) paced the UVA offense. Jackson finished with a game-high four goals and Shoemaker added three goals with an assist. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Vander Kolk (Severna Park, Md.) picked up 12 saves in the win.

The Cavaliers have won five of their last six games entering Sunday’s contest. Virginia ranks second in the ACC in caused turnovers per game (10.25) and ground balls per game (20.20). UVA is averaging 12.20 goals per game, while opponents are scoring 11.15 per contest.

This will be the ninth time Virginia and North Carolina have met in the NCAA Championships, with UNC holding a 6-2 advantage. The last time the two teams met in the tournament, Virginia topped UNC, 10-9, in Chapel Hill to advance to the NCAA Final Four on May 17, 2014. North Carolina leads the overall series 23-13 and took the regular season meeting 21-11 on March 11.

North Carolina earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament as the defending national champions. The Tar Heels lead the ACC and are second in the nation with 17.22 draw controls per game. UNC also leads the conference in points per game (23.00), scoring margin (5.94), scoring offense (15.61) and shots per game (37.72). Molly Hendrick leads the ACC with 66 goals, averaging 3.67 per game. Sammy Jo Tracy is averaging 7.39 draw controls per game. Goalkeeper Caylee Waters has 156 saves with a 9.60 goals against average.

The winner of Sunday’s game will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals. Four quarterfinal games will be played on the campuses of competing institutions. The winners of the four quarterfinal games will advance to the semifinals held at Gillette Stadium in Boston, Mass., May 26 and 28.
