CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The No. 13 Virginia men’s cross country team was picked to finish second and the women’s program was tabbed sixth in the ACC Preseason Cross Country Poll released by the league office on Thursday (Aug. 31).

The nationally ranked Cavalier men’s team was selected second behind four-time defending ACC Champions, Syracuse. UVA finished second at last year’s ACC Championships after four student-athletes placed in the top 15. Lachlan Cook was named ACC Freshman of the Year.

Virginia is one of four ACC men’s programs with a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason national ranking. Syracuse leads the conference with a No. 3 ranking followed by Virginia at No. 13. Virginia Tech ranks 26th while NC State tabbed 28th.

The Virginia women’s program was selected sixth in the ACC preseason poll. Defending champions, NC State picked up the first-place nod followed by Notre Dame and Syracuse, respectively.

Emily Mulhern led UVA at last year’s competition, earning all-ACC honors with a 21st place finish.

The Cavaliers programs open the season on Saturday (Sept. 2) with the UVA Duals. The competition at Panorama Farms will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Admission to all home Virginia cross country meets is free.
