Thursday night’s women’s basketball game at Temple had many deep #UVAWBB ties. The Owls, coached by former Cavalier Tonya Cardoza, were taking on South Carolina, coached by Cardoza’s former teammate Dawn Staley (Staley on the left in the photo above, Cardoza on the right). The two players starred together in multiple NCAA National Tournament appearances at UVA. As a senior in 1991, Cardoza led Virginia in scoring and tied Dawn Staley for rebounding. Check out this article talking about the lifelong friendship and special bond shared by the two coaches.
Former #UVAWBB head coach Debbie Ryan was in attendance for the historic meeting of the former Hoos, and was interviewed for the TV broadcast by another former Cavalier and one of her former players, Chelsea Shine.
South Carolina won the game, 87-60, a victory that made Staley the all-time winngest coach in Gamecock history, but it was hardly the most historic moment of the trip back to her hometown of Philadelphia. Earlier this week, when visiting her old rec center, Dawn Staley Lane was unveiled, a street named in her honor.
