Doctor Baseball
Charlottesville baseball legend Sammy Beale passed away on New Year’s Eve. Beale, a former Cavalier player (1969-71) and a Charlottesville native, was an assistant coach and pitching coach for Jim West, then Dennis Womack at Virginia over a 12-year span (1976-88). Beale also ran a baseball academy in town and went on to build the program at The Miller School. Jerry Ratcliffe shares this wonderful tribute in today’s Daily Progress.

For the second straight year, former #UVAMLax player Adam Ghitelman has headed to Nicaragua (and this year Argentina as well) to introduce the game of lacrosse to youth in Central and South America as well as participating in community service projects. In addition to his international youth outreach, Ghitelman has also been named the World Lacrosse Foundation Ambassador of the Year. The Casey Powell World Lacrosse Foundation works to “inspire, share, and support severely injured and sick lacrosse players and their families” and achieves this mission partially through the volunteer work of ambassadors within the sport. Ghitelman, an All-American at UVA and the goalkeeper for the Cavaiers’ 2011 NCAA champion squad, is currently an assistant coach at Utah as well as playing for the Atlanta Blaze of Major League Lacrosse. Check out Ghitelman’s Twitter feed for more details about his efforts.
