Gianni Ross Named the ITA Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s tennis freshman Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) was named the 2018 Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Monday (May 21).

Ross, who joined the team in January, finished the year with a 14-9 record in singles, playing primarily on courts two and three, and spent two weeks ranked No. 120 in the Oracle/ITA national rankings. He was ranked as high as No. 20 in doubles while partnering with junior Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man). The tandem was named the ACC Doubles Team of the Week on March 27 after picking up a pair of wins over top-25 ranked opponents.

Ross is the 11th player in program history to be named the regional Rookie of the Year with a Cavalier earning the honor in eight of the last nine seasons. This is Ross’ first postseason honor.
