Johanson Falls In NCAA Singles First-Round Match

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In a match that featured 12 breaks, the seeded player came out on top on Wednesday as Rosie Johanson (Vancouver, British Columbia) dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Stacey Fung of Washington in the opening round of the NCAA Singles Championship.

Fung, who is seeded in the group of 9-16 players, is currently ranked No. 16 in the ITA Women’s Singles rankings. Johanson is ranked No. 32, a career-high for the Cavalier.

After falling behind 3-1 in the first set when Fung broke serve for the first time on the afternoon, Johanson rallied as she answered with a break of her own. She then held serve and broke again to take a 4-3 lead in the first set. Fung then broke Johanson’s serve for a second time before extending her lead to 5-4.

At deuce in the next game, Fung broke Johanson for the third time to claim the first set.

The second set started in identical fashion to the first with the players holding serve until Fung broke for a 3-1 lead. Neither player could hold serve down the stretch with the set score moving to 5-4 and leaving Johanson serving to stay alive in the match.

Just like the previous set, the players battled to deuce before Fung broke serve to claim the set and take the 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Johanson will return to action on Thursday, pairing with Meghan Kelley in the opening round of doubles competition at the NCAA Championships. The Virginia duo, which is ranked No. 16 nationally, will face the No. 18 duo of Veronica Miroshnichenko and Eva Marie Voracek. Times and courts for doubles have not been determined but will be assigned as other matches are completed.
