Las Vegas, NV The No. 17 Virginia women’s golf team opened its spring season with a third-place finish at the 16-team Rebel Beach Invitational in Las Vegas. Virginia shot 28-over 892 that included rounds of 296 (+8), 299 (+11) and 297 (+9). No. 10 Arizona won the team title at 14-over 878 while UNLV was second at 18-over 882.
 
Virginia was led by a sixth-place finish from sophomore Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.). She had rounds of 75, 69 and 76 at Spanish Trail Country Club for a two-day total of 4-over 220. It was the fifth top-10 finish during her career.
 
Senior Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) was 16th for the Cavaliers at 9-over 225 while freshman Riley Smyth (Cary, N.C.) was 23rd at 227. Playing in her first collegiate event, Smyth led UVA during the final round by shooting even par 72.
 
Senior Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) rebounded during the final round to move up to 28th place at 13-over 229. Redding led UVA during the first round with a 1-under 71. She struggled during the second round, shooting 13-over 85 before shooting 1-over 73 during the final 18 holes.
 
Junior Julia Ford (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was 39th at 232.
 
The Cavaliers are off until they make their annual trek to compete in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The three-day, 54-event takes place March 8-10.
