UVA Opens Clemson Invitational Tied for 12th
Sunset, S.C. – The No. 17 Virginia women’s golf team is tied for 12th-place after Sunday’s opening round of play at the Clemson Invitational in Sunset, S.C. The Cavaliers shot 4-over 292. No. 7 Vanderbilt and No. 14 Auburn lead the field at 10-under 278.
Sophomore Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.) posted her low round of the year to lead the Cavaliers. She shot 4-under 68 and is tied for second place, just one stroke behind tournament leader Julie McCarthy of Auburn.
Freshman Riley Smyth (Cary, N.C.) matched her best 18-hole score as a Cavalier, shooting even par 72 and is in 25th place. Senior Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) is in 67th place with a 75, senior Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) is 85th at 77 and junior Julia Ford (Shrewsbury, Mass.) is one shot behind her in 89th place.
UVA is playing without senior Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.), who finished play at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur on Saturday.
UVA is paired with Tulane, Augusta and Indiana for Monday’s second round. Play begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
