CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –Virginia men’s tennis freshman Brandon Nakashima (San Diego, Calif.) will be competing in the 2019 boy’s singles championship of the French Open at Roland-Garros in Paris, France.
 
Nakashima is the No. 3 seed in the draw and is currently the No. 4 ranked junior in the world. He opened play on Sunday (June 2) by downing Kevin Chahoud of Sweden, 6-1, 6-2, and followed with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Eric Vanshelboim on Monday to advance to the third round. He began play against the No. 15 seed, Filip Cristian Jianu of Romania, on Wednesday (June 5), but play was halted with the match tied 5-5 in the first set due to rain. When it resumed on Thursday morning, Nakashima won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-3, but Jianu won the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-4, to end Nakashima’s run. 
 
Nakashima still qualifies to play in junior tournaments as he has not yet turned 18.
 
He was named the ACC Freshman of the Year and ITA Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year as well as being the only freshman named to the All-ACC First Team.
