Aiken, S.C. – The Virginia men’s golf team is in second place after the first 36 holes of play at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C. The Cavaliers finished the first day of play at 6-under 554. South Carolina leads the 18-team field at 23-under 537.
 
Sophomore Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) led the Cavaliers by shooting 4-under 136. He had rounds of 1-over 71 and 5-under 65. His second-round score was his best single-round effort as a collegiate, topping the 68 he posted at last year’s Palmetto Intercollegiate. Senior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) is in sixth place at 3-under 139. Walsh carded scores of 2-under 68 and 1-under 69.
 
Junior Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) is in 13th place at 1-over 141, freshman David Morgan (Naples, Fla.) is 21st at 142 and senior Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) is 28th at 143. Morgan equaled his best 18-hole score with a 69 during the second round.
 
South Carolina’s Will Miles lead the field at 11-under 129.
 
The final round of the tournament is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday. UVA will be paired with South Carolina and Clemson during the final round. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
