No. 22 Virginia Blanks Pittsburgh With 7-0 Victory
PITTSBURGH –The No. 22 Virginia women’s tennis team (12-4, 5-3 ACC) swept through doubles and singles action to claim a 7-0 road victory at Pittsburgh on Friday afternoon.
The Cavaliers worked quickly to grab the doubles point with shutout victories on courts two and three before sweeping the singles action with straight-set victories at all six positions.
The duo of Vivian Glozman (Bellevue, Wash.) and Sofia Munera (Pereira, Colombia) turned in the first doubles victory, taking the win 6-0 on court two. The tandem of Hunter Bleser (New Braunfels, Texas) and Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) then clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 win on court three.
In singles play, Virginia wasted no time in extending the lead as Munera locked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Natasumi Okamoto on court five. It was followed by a 6-2, 6-1 win on court four by Chloe Gullickson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), the nation’s 108th-ranked singles player, over Pitt’s Mariona Perez Noguera.
Kelley, who is ranked No. 39 in singles, clinched the match for the Cavaliers with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the top of the lineup against Claudia Bartolome.
Virginia moved on toward the sweep with a fifth-overall point coming from reigning ACC Freshman of the Week, Amber O’Dell (New Milford, N.J.). The No. 68 singles player in the nation, O’Dell won 6-4, 6-3 over Gabriela Rezende to put the Cavaliers on top 5-0 in the overall dual score.
Bleser and Glozman then closed things out, winning second-set tiebreaks to lock up the 7-0 victory. Bleser won 6-3, 7-6 (?) on court five against Clara Lucas before Glozman won 7-5, 7-6 (5) against Luisa Varon on court two.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday (March 24), continuing an ACC road weekend at No. 3 Duke. Virginia and the Blue Devils will play at noon with live stats linked at VirginiaSpots.com.
