Auburn, Ala. – The No. 17 Virginia women’s golf team is in seventh place following the opening round of play at the NCAA Auburn Regional site. The Cavaliers shot 8-over 296 at Saugahatchee Country Club during the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament. Sixth-ranked Vanderbilt leads the 18-team field at 1-under 287.
 
The top six teams from the NCAA’s four regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships. UVA is two shots behind Tennessee and Maryland, the two teams tied for fifth place after the first round.
 
Virginia was led by senior Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.), who is tied for fourth place at 1-under 71. She is one shot behind a trio of players tied for first place at 2-under 70. Starting on the 10th tee, Redding made a birdie to open her round and stood at 3-under after her first six holes before collecting a bogey on No. 18 to close out her front nine. She played her final nine holes at 1-over par, collecting two birdies and posting three bogeys, including one on the ninth hole to finish her day.
 
Senior Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) is in 21st place at 2-over 74 while classmate Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) is in 35th place at 3-over 75. Sophomore Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.) finished the first round in 51st place to round out UVA’s first-day scoring with a 76. Freshman Riley Smyth (Cary, N.C.) was 70th with a 78.
 
UVA will tee off Tuesday starting at 8 a.m. from the No. 1 tee while paired with Auburn and Furman. The final round of competition will take place Wednesday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
