UVA Reaches Match Play at ACC Championships, Wins Commonwealth Clash Point
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The No. 25 Virginia women’s golf finished stroke play in third place at the ACC Championships to advance to Sunday’s semifinal round of match play to decide the team title. UVA shot 3-under 285 for a three-round total of 8-under 856. Wake Forest finished first in stroke play at 23-under 841 while Clemson was second at 16-under 848. North Carolina also advanced to match play by placing fourth at 1-over 865.
Virginia will face Clemson at 8 a.m. Sunday in the match play semifinals. Wake Forest and North Carolina will square off on the other side of the bracket. The championship match is slated to start one hour after the conclusion of the semifinal round.
The Cavaliers have advanced to match play at the ACC Championships in all four seasons the league has used that format to decide the conference champion. Wake Forest is the only other ACC squad to play in match play all four years.
The Cavaliers’ stroke play finish was also better than in-state rival Virginia Tech (eighth/ +9, 873) to allow UVA to win the point at stake in the Commonwealth Clash competition between the two schools. UVA now leads this year’s competition by a 11-6.5 advantage.
Virginia was led in stroke play by the runner-up finish of Amanda Sambach. She shot 3-under 69 on Saturday to tie for second place with Clemson’s Isabella Rawl at 7-under 209. Sambach was the 2023 individual champion and placed third in 2022 as a freshman. Wake Forest’s Rachel Kuehn shot 5-under 67 during the final round to capture medalist honors at 10-under 206.
Sambach becomes the first Cavalier to post a trio of top-three finishes at the ACC Championships during her career.
UVA’s Jaclyn LaHa and Celeste Valinho tied for 20th place at 1-over 217. LaHa posted a score of 1-under 71 while Valinho finished with a score of 2-over 74. It marked the third time during her career that Valinho has placed in the top-20 at the ACC Championships.
Rebecca Skoler was 29th at 3-over 219 including a final-round score of 71. Megan Propeck was one shot behind her in 32nd place. She shot 74 on Saturday.
The semifinals and finals of the 2024 ACC Women’s Golf Championship match play will be televised live on ACC Network Extra. Ryan Burr (play-by-play) and Suzy Whaley (analyst) will provide the call. A championship recap show will air May 6 at 8 p.m. on ACCN.
