No. 5 Virginia Picks Up 3-1 Road Win at Longwood
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 5 Virginia field hockey team (8-2) picked up a 3-1 road win at Longwood (4-4) on Sunday (Sept. 29) in Farmville, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first quarter, freshman Laura Janssen (Nijmegen, Netherlands) broke the deadlock 3:16 into the second, dribbling through the defense and firing off a shot. Senior Anzel Viljoen (Matamata, New Zealand) added a second goal with five minutes remaining in the first half, deflecting in a shot from junior Rachel Robinson (Mount Joy, Pa.) after a corner. Junior Makayla Gallen (Glen Mills, Pa.) converted a second-chance opportunity in the fourth quarter. After an initial shot by Gallen was saved, sophomore Annie McDonough (Kennett Square, Pa.) picked up the rebound, passed back to Gallen who scored to give UVA a 3-0 advantage. Longwood scored in the final 1:30 of the game to break up the shutout.

NOTES
- Gallen’s goal was her team-leading seventh of the year
- Virginia held a 20-7 advantage in shots
- UVA had 10 penalty corners while the Lancers had two
- Redshirt freshman goalie Taylor Henriksen (Falls Church, Va.) made her collegiate debut. She played the final 3:28 of the game, making one save and allowing one goal
- Redshirt sophomore goalie Lauren Hausheer (West Windsor, N.J.) also had one save
- Longwood’s Katie Wyman made nine saves, including six in the fourth quarter
- McDonough had her fifth assist of the season
- Janssen’s goal was her third of the season and was her second game-winner
- Viljoen now has 12 points on the season, ranking second on the team
- Freshman Abbigail Starnes (Chesapeake, Va.) made her first career start
- Temperatures for the game topped 90 degrees with a heat index of 97
- This was Virginia’s third game of the week
- Virginia holds an 19-2-1 advantage in the all-time series. Longwood’s last win over UVA was in 1976
