CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 10 Virginia men’s tennis team (2-0) opened up the 2020 dual match season by sweeping both Furman (0-2) and Washington and Lee (1-1) by 7-0 scores on Wednesday (Jan. 15) at the Boar’s Head Sports Club

In the opener against Furman, Virginia won two of three doubles matches to win the point. UVA swept through singles with five of the courts decided in straight sets. Sophomore Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) clinched the victory with his 6-4, 6-3 win on court two.

Against Washington and Lee, the Cavaliers won the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 victories on courts two and three. Goetz again clinched the victory, this time with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court one.

FROM HEAD COACH ANDRES PEDROSO
“I thought the doubles point against Furman was really close and guys were in holes. We were in holes on one, two, three. I think we were down a break on every single court and guys with not all that much experience came through and fought back. They came through with some huge shots in big moments. That is always great to see in your first match from guys who haven’t played that many dual matches.”
