CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 10 Virginia men’s tennis team (2-0) opened up the 2020 dual match season by sweeping both Furman (0-2) and Washington and Lee (1-1) by 7-0 scores on Wednesday (Jan. 15) at the Boar’s Head Sports Club
In the opener against Furman, Virginia won two of three doubles matches to win the point. UVA swept through singles with five of the courts decided in straight sets. Sophomore Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) clinched the victory with his 6-4, 6-3 win on court two.
Against Washington and Lee, the Cavaliers won the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 victories on courts two and three. Goetz again clinched the victory, this time with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court one.
“I thought the doubles point against Furman was really close and guys were in holes. We were in holes on one, two, three. I think we were down a break on every single court and guys with not all that much experience came through and fought back. They came through with some huge shots in big moments. That is always great to see in your first match from guys who haven’t played that many dual matches.”

  • Freshman Christian Alshon (Boca Raton, Fla.) won the first two dual matches of his career, playing at No. 6 against Furman and at No. 4 against Washington and Lee
  • Freshman RJ Fresen (Short Hills, N.J.) also won his dual match debut, playing at No. 5 against Washington and Lee
  • Junior Jerome Romualdez (Manila, Philippines) picked up the first dual match victory of his career, topping Evan Brady of Washington and Lee 2-6, 6-3, 7-5

  • Virginia will open conference play on Saturday, playing at Louisville on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 12 p.m.
  • The Cavaliers are back at the Boar’s Head next Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 25-26), hosting ITA Kickoff Weekend matches when Memphis, NC State, Utah State and Virginia will be vying for an invitation to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Matches are at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. both days
