CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The Virginia men’s and women’s squash teams will face Cornell and Dickinson in matches over the weekend. Both Cavalier teams will battle Cornell in a 4:30 p.m. neutral site match on Saturday (Jan. 18) Pennsylvania’s Penn Squash Courts in Philadelphia, before facing Dickinson on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Kline Squash Center in Carlisle, Pa.
 
In the Rankings
The Virginia men’s team (8-3) enters the weekend ranked eighth in the latest College Squash Association poll, while the women’s team (6-3) is ranked 10th nationally.
 
Cornell is ranked 14th in the men’s poll with a 3-4 record, while its women’s team is ranked ninth with a 3-2 record. The Dickinson women’s team holds a top-25 national ranking heading into Sunday’s match ranked 20th. The Red Devils hold a 4-5 record on the women’s side and a 3-8 record on the men’s side.
 
Steady-Handed Hoos
• The Cavaliers have started 2020 strong, going undefeated in their opening matches of the new year.
• The women’s team captured two dominate wins, defeating Vassar 9-0 and topping No. 12 Brown 8-1. In the win against Brown, the Cavaliers battled through four matches that went into extra games.
• The men’s team is on a 3-0 run after returning from the winter break. The team swept Vassar 9-0, before securing two back-to-back 5-4 wins against No. 13 Western Ontario and No. 16 Brown.
• The 5-4 victory against Brown was the 11th one-score win for the men’s team in two years.
 
Scouting the Big Red
• The Cavaliers will face Cornell for the fourth time since 2017.
• The women’s team is 2-1 all time against the Big Red and 1-1 in neutral site matches.
• The two teams faced off twice during the 2018-19 season with the Cavaliers winning the first meeting 6-3 during the regular season and Cornell capturing the second win with a 6-3 score during the women’s College Squash Association Championships.
• The UVA men’s team is 3-0 against Cornell, winning all three meetings 5-4. The two programs last met during the 2018-19 regular season. William Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) broke a 4-4 tie in that match to capture the deciding point for the Cavaliers.
• The Big Red men’s team is 3-4 on the season with wins over then-ranked No. 12 St. Lawrence, Hobart  and No. 16 Brown.
• The women’s team recorded wins against then-ranked No. 25 St. Lawrence, William Smith and No. 12 Brown.
 
The Red Devils
• This is the third meeting between the two programs.
• Virginia holds a 2-0 record in its women’s matches against Dickinson. The Cavaliers captured a dominate 9-0 victory during the 2019 Mid-Atlantic Team Tournament. Virginia won eight matches 3-0 to take the win over the Red Devils.
• On the men’s side, both programs hold a win as the Cavaliers dropped their first meeting against Dickinson 7-2 during the 2017-18 season before responding with an 8-1 victory a year later.
• The 2019 Mid-Atlantic Team Tournament win saw the Cavaliers top six matches 3-0.
• Dickinson enters the match with the men’s team holding a 3-8 record, capturing wins against Connecticut, No. 15 St. Lawrence and Hamilton.
• The Red Devil women’s team is 4-5 on the year, topping then-ranked No. 24 Connecticut, St. Lawrence, Hamilton and No. 24 Colby.
• Dickinson will face Tufts in a match on Saturday before hosting the Cavaliers on Sunday.
