Virginia Continues Home Stand Tuesday Against William & Mary

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia (5-3) will be home to host William & Mary (3-4) on Tuesday afternoon at Disharoon Park. The contest will air live on ACCNX with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.

Fans can purchase tickets at a discounted rate in advance by going online to UVATix.com. For all regular season home games, available reserved single-game tickets can be purchased in advance for $8 (Sections 101-105 / 115-116) or $10 (Sections 106 and 114) online or via mobile devices. Tickets are $10 (Sections 101-105 / 115-116) or $12(Sections 106 and 114) at the Disharoon Park ticket office on game day. General admission single-game tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the Disharoon Park ticket office locations on game day.

Parking
Four (4) parking bays in the JPJ South (formerly U-Hall lot) lot will be reserved for baseball fans on a first-come, first-served basis. Overflow parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in the JPJ South and JPJ West lots and JPJ Parking Garage.

LEADING OFF
• Virginia is in the midst of a 15-game home stand, the longest in head coach Brian O’Connor’s tenure.
• The Cavaliers have won 16 of its last 17 games against non-conference opponents at home.
• Virginia went 16-2 at Disharoon Park against non-conference opponents in 2019 and is 38-13 against non-conference foes since the beginning of the 2018 season.
• Virginia is looking to avenge a 9-3 loss against William & Mary last season. It marked the second setback against the Tribe in the last four meetings.
• Under O’Connor, the Cavaliers are 16-3 against the Tribe and 77-31-2 in an all-time series that was first played in 1902.
• Tuesday will mark nine-straight meetings between William & Mary at Disharoon Park. The last road game for Virginia in the series came in 2014. The two programs have played each other in all but two seasons (1996 and 2006) since 1968.
 
OFFENSIVE JUGGERNAUT
• The Cavaliers have posted 10 or more runs in three-straight games and totaled 42 runs in a four-game set against Bucknell.
• Virginia lost for only the second time since the 2015 season when scoring 10 or more runs after dropping a 14-10 decision in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader.
• The Cavaliers hit five home runs in the four-game series, the first five long balls of the year.
• Virginia went into the weekend with two extra base hits and racked up 17 (11 doubles, a triple and five home runs) in four games against Bucknell.
 
ON THE HILL
• Right-hander Zach Messinger will get his second midweek start of the season after striking out four in 3.2 innings of a no-decision against VMI last Wednesday.
• Making his seventh career start, Virginia boasts a 5-1 record with Messinger starting on the mound.
• In his only other appearance of the season, Messinger struck out a career-high, six of the seven batters he faced against Oklahoma on Feb. 15.
• The sophomore has fanned 10 batters (third most on the team) and walked only one in 6.0 innings of work.
 
PLAYER NOTES
• In the final three games against Bucknell, Zack Gelof went 6-for-11 (.571) with five runs scored, two doubles, a triple, two home runs and six RBI. He has reached base in all but one game this season, having his 16-game reached base streak dating back to last season snapped in the Bucknell series opener.
• Gelof and teammate Christian Hlinka hit home runs in each game of Saturday’s doubleheader. For Hlinka the homers were the first two of his career. His long ball in game one came as a pinch-hitter, the first pinch-hit homer by a Cavalier since 2018 (Jack Weiller).
• Freshman Chris Newell enters Tuesday as the ACC co-leader in walks (9) and also ranks second in stolen bases (5). The center fielder has reached base in all but one game this season. Newell recorded the first home run of his career in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
• Seeing his first career action at first base this season, Devin Ortiz has been a force at the plate. In the series opener against Bucknell, the junior hit a grand slam, his second career homer. The grand slam was the first by a Cavalier since Alex Tappen cleared the bases against Radford in 2018.
• Junior Brendan Rivoli led all Cavaliers with nine hits in five games last week. He currently leads the Cavaliers with a .321 batting average.
