CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 6 Virginia men’s tennis team (4-0) picked up a 4-0 victory against Ball State (2-1) on Saturday (Jan. 29) in the opening round of ITA Kickoff Weekend matches at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The Cavaliers will now face Georgia Tech (3-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Boar’s Head in the final. The winner of that match will earn an invitation to the 47th Annual ITA National Team Indoor Championships, being held Feb. 18-21 in Seattle, Wash.

Virginia picked up two quick wins on doubles courts one and two to secure the doubles point. Senior Ryan Goetz won his match on three by a 6-3, 6-0 score, followed by a 6-1, 6-2 victory from sophomore Jeffrey von der Schulenburg on court two. Grad student Bar Botzer clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win on the top court

MATCH NOTES

  • Virginia has only failed to advance out of ITA Kickoff Weekend twice in the previous 13 years of the tournament
  • The Cavaliers have won six ITA National Team Indoor Championships, including four-straight from 2008 to 2011 and most recently in 2017 when the tournament was held in Charlottesville
  • This was Bar Botzer’s second time playing at No. 1 singles this season
  • Virginia swept all six first sets in singles
  • Sophomore Alexander Kiefer held a 5-1 lead in the second set when Botzer beat him to the clinch
  • Georgia Tech won 4-2 against Middle Tennessee State in the first match of the day to advance to the championship. Georgia Tech is the 2-seed at the Charlottesville site
  • Ball State and Middle Tennessee will play in a consolation match at 10 a.m. Saturday before the UVA/GT final
