CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (9-6) continues play on the road on Tuesday (March 1) when the Cavaliers travel to take on Liberty (8-6) in a 5 p.m. contest at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium.

• Sarah Coon continues to lead the Cavaliers at the plate, hitting .455 with 15 RBI and an .841 slug percentage.

• Lauren VanAssche hit her first career home run, leading off the game against UNCG with her solo shot. She is the first UVA player to hit a leadoff home run since Haley Busby against Notre Dame (4/19/19).

• Madison Harris made her first appearances in the circle for the Cavaliers this past weekend, working 4.2 scoreless innings in three relief appearances. She struck out six and walked one while allowing only two hits.
• Mikayla Houge continues to lead the Hoos in the circle with a 5-1 record and a 2.37 ERA through 38.1 innings of work. She has struck out 21 and walked only four while limiting opponents to a .205 batting average.
• Virginia has 13 home runs this season which is more than halfway to last season’s total of 24 through only 15 games in 2022.
• The Hoos also have 45 extra-base hits through 15 games also more than halfway to the 2021 season total of 79 extra-base hits as the power production has been up through the early portion of the season.

THE SERIES WITH LIBERTY
The Hoos and Flames have faced each other 74 times in the history of the two programs with Liberty leading the all-time series 47-27. Liberty has won back-to-back games, claiming both meetings in the 2021 season, though the teams split the two-game series in the 2019 season.

LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE FLAMES
Virginia’s last meeting against the Flames came in the 2021 season and was played at Liberty. A tight battle went the way of the Flames as Liberty grabbed the 3-2 win over the Cavaliers. Virginia took the early lead with a bases-loaded walk from Bailey Winscott in the second inning before Liberty would rally for the 3-1 lead. Virginia cut the lead to one with an RBI groundout from Ashley Jennings in the seventh, but Liberty ended the rally with two Hoos in scoring position to pick up the win.

UP NEXT FOR THE HOOS
Virginia will continue to play on the road this weekend, traveling to compete at the Tennessee Invitational. Competition begins with games against South Alabama and No. 17 Tennessee on Friday (March 4). Virginia will also face Dartmouth on Saturday (March 5) in round-robin play before bracket play begins.
