Chris Rodesch Advances to the Round of 16 at the ITA All-American
TULSA, Okla. – Three members of the Virginia men’s tennis team will be competing in the main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s first national tournament of the year, the ITA Men’s All-American Championships, being held Oct. 5-9 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Junior Chris Rodesch, the No. 6 seed in the tournament, opened play with a 6-4, 6-0 win against Alexander Hoogmartens of UCLA and then topped Jonah Braswell of Florida 6-4, 6-1 on Thursday in the second round to advance to the Round of 16 where he fell 6-2, 6-3 against Philip Henning of Georgia.
Junior Jeffrey von der Schulenburg pulled an upset in his opener, taking down the No. 5 seed Nikola Slavic of Ole Miss 7-5, 6-3. He fell 6-3, 6-1 against Ryan Seggerman of UNC on Thursday in the second round.
Junior Iñaki Montes dropped into the consolation bracket with a 6-1, 6-4 loss against Emile Hudd of Tennessee. Montes was the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Montes, along with 2-seed Cannon Kingsley of Ohio State, 5-seed Slavic, and 7-seed JJ Tracy of Ohio State all suffered first round losses and will be competing in the consolation bracket.
Nineteen of the top twenty ranked players in the ITA Collegiate Tennis National Preseason Rankings were entered into the main draw of the singles championship. The 64-player draw is comprised of 48 automatic qualifiers based on preseason national rankings, regional representation, at-large bids and wild cards, and 16 players advancing from the qualifying tournament.
Last year, Rodesch and Ryan Goetz won the consolation doubles title while Rodesch was runner-up in the consolation singles bracket.
