LYNCHBURG, Va.  –  Members of the Virginia men’s tennis team competed at the ITA Atlantic Regional Tournament, held Nov. 11-16 at the Liberty Tennis Center in Lynchburg, Va.

Senior Jeffrey von der Schulenburg advanced to the semifinals of the singles draw before falling against Mathis Bondaz of VCU on Monday morning (Oct. 16).

Von der Schulenburg and fellow senior Alexander Kiefer advanced to the semifinals of the doubles draw but withdrew. Kiefer had advanced to the singles quarterfinals before withdrawing from that bracket.

Grad students James Hopper and Edoardo Graziani as well as sophomore Måns Dahlberg all competed in the main draw of singles with Graziani and Dahlberg advancing to the Round of 16 and Hopper making the quarterfinals where he fell in a match against von der Schulenburg.

Hopper and Graziani partnered in the doubles draw with Dahlberg playing with freshman Dylan Dietrich. Both tandems advanced to the second round before suffering a defeat.

Freshman Stefan Regalia began play in the prequalifying singles draw (referred to as the ‘bronze draw’), winning three matches to advance to qualifying play. He won his opener in that draw before falling in the second round. Sophomores Douglas Yaffa and Ty Switzer also competed in qualifying singles (referred to as the ‘silver draw’).

The ITA Atlantic Regional is the feeder tournament for the ITA Fall National Championships. The finalists from the singles and doubles draw automatically earn spots in the final championship of the individual season.

Monday, Oct. 16

  • Jeffrey von der Schulenburg fell 6-4, 6-3 against Mathis Bondaz of VCU in the singles semifinals
  • von der Schulenburg and Kiefer withdrew from the doubles semifinals

Sunday, Oct. 15

  • von der Schulenburg wins 6-3, 6-2 against  Codie van Schalkwyk of Old Dominion
  • James Hopper topped Luis Felipe Miguel of Liberty 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4
  • von der Schulenburg and Hopper faced one another in the quarterfinals with von der Schulenburg winning 6-2, 6-3
  • von der Schulenburg and Kiefer won 8-6 against Sam Bossem and Loren Byers of Penn State and 8-5 against Maxime Mareschal-Hay and  Yanis Moundir of ODU to advance to the doubles semifinals
  • Kiefer won 6-4, 6-3 against Maxime Mareschal-Hay of ODU, but then withdrew due to injury
  • Edoardo Graziani was edged 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 by Mathis Bondaz of VCU
  • Måns Dahlberg fell 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 against 3-seed Ryan Fishback of Virginia Tech
  • Hopper and Graziani fell 8-6 against Matisse Bobichon and Mathis Bondaz of VCU
  • Dahlberg and Dylan Dietrich fell 8-5 against German Samofalov and Romain Gales of VCU

Saturday, Oct. 14

  • von der Schulenburg, the top seed in the singles draw, won 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2 against Romain Gales of VCU
  • Hopper won 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 against Hugo Maia of Virginia Tech
  • Kiefer won 6-0, 6-1 against Manuel Gonclaves of Virginia Tech
  • Graziani won 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 against Cosme Rolland de Ravel of Old Dominion
  • Dahlberg won 6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-4 against  Gregoire Barety of Temple
  • Hopper and Graziani are the top seed in the doubles draw. They opened with an 8-6 win against Satchel Benn and Oliver Hague of William & Mary
  • von der Schulenburg and Kiefer, the 3-seed in the doubles draw, topped Daniel Kliebhan and Paxton Pritchard of Richmond 8-4
  • Dahlberg and Dietrich downed Youssef Sadek and Julian Lozano of JMU 8-1

Friday, Oct. 13

  • Stefan Regalia fell 6-3, 6-3 against Arthur O’Sullivan of Georgetown, ending his four-match win streak at the tournament
  • Douglas Yaffa fell 7-6 (4), 6-3 against Mikeal Carpenter of Morgan State in a consolation match
  • Ty Switzer withdrew from his consolation match

Thursday, Oct. 12

  • Regalia topped Jacco Arends of George Mason 7-5, 6-4 in the final round of bronze draw matches to advance into the silver draw
  • Regalia downed  Sean Joseph of William & Mary 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round of the silver draw
  • Yaffa fell 6-3, 6-1 against Alexandre Gluck of Delaware in the first round of silver singles. He will play a consolation match on Friday
  • Switzer fell 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-1 against Davis Wiley of Richmond in the first round of silver singles. He will play a consolation match on Friday
  • Yaffa and Regalia won a consolation bronze doubles match 8-3 against Rayan El Khalifi and Jacco Arends of George Mason

Wednesday, Oct. 11

  • Regalia began play in bronze singles. He topped Liam Kilmer of Bucknell 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 and Keita Duclos of Duquesne 6-1, 6-0 to advance to final round of the bronze draw
  • Yaffa and Regalia were edged 8-7 (3) in doubles against Amar Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald of Bucknell in doubles
