Toni Harris, Ph.D was named Virginia’s assistant sports psychologist in August of 2022. Dr. Harris is a licensed clinical psychologist providing psychological wellness and sports performance support to student-athletes across 25 teams. She offers individual psychotherapeutic services that explore topics related to adjustment, psychological wellness, sports performance, identity, injury rehabilitation, and relationships. Dr. Harris also consults with coaches and staff to provide psychological wellness and performance programming.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Harris was a faculty member at Virginia State University for 16 years in the department of psychology and was the CEO of Vanguard Consulting.  During her faculty tenure, she taught undergraduate and graduate courses and supervised student research. Her research interests in academic achievement and health disparities led to authorship of peer-reviewed publications and grant funding as either PI or co-PI.  Before leaving VSU, Dr. Harris served as the university’s first sports psychologist, providing individual psychotherapeutic services and psychoeducational programming.  Dr. Harris’ clinical expertise also includes psychological assessments, disability evaluations and multicultural competency training.

Dr. Harris earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in African American studies from Virginia and later earned a Ph.D. from VCU.
