    The third-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team gets its first taste of game action in 2014 at 7 p.m. Saturday when it plays host to Rutgers in exhibition play at Klockner Stadium. The friendly also serves as the first home event on the 2014-15 UVa Athletics calendar.

    Virginia Falls 2-1 to Rutgers in Exhibition Opener

    The Virginia men’s soccer team dropped its exhibition opener for the 2014 season, 2-1, to Rutgers Saturday evening at Klockner Stadium..

    “It was good to get out and try some different things tonight,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We have a lot to work on, but we’re going to get better. We played a lot of guys and that was the plan. We wanted them to get a run and learn from this. Give credit to Rutgers; they had a good mentality and a good rotation of players in and out.” (read more)

    Virginia Plays Georgetown to 1-1 Draw in Exhibition Finale

    Zinkhan Golden Goal Lifts No. 3 Virginia to 1-0 OT Win over No. 25 ODU

    Ryan Zinkhan (Sr., Fredericksburg, Va.) scored just over a minute into extra time to send the third-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over No. 25 Old Dominion Friday evening in front of 4,144 spectators at Klockner Stadium.     Caldwell Called into U.S. U-20 Training Camp

    Sept. 2, 2014
    Virginia freshman goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell (Todd, N.C.) has been called into to the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team’s international training camp in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 19-man team will train from Sept. 1-10. The highlighted game of the trip will include a matchup against Argentina’s U-20s on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

    Caldwell is one of just four current college players to earn a spot on the roster. He also has spent time with the U.S. U-17 and U-18 teams during his career. (read more)

    No. 3 Virginia Falls in Double Overtime at Tulsa, 1-0

    Despite a brilliant performance from goalkeeper Calle Brown (R-Sr., Leesburg, Va.), the third-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team fell 1-0 in double overtime to Tulsa Friday evening in the Hurricane Classic, hosted at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium. Cameron Drackett’s goal in the 106th minute propelled the Golden Hurricane to the victory.

    The Cavaliers will face No. 18 UAB Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Tulsa. Live statistics (GameTracker) will be available on VirginiaSports.com and through the Virginia Sports app, which can be downloaded through iTunes. (read more)

    No. 3 Virginia Tops No. 18 UAB, 2-1, at Hurricane Classic

    The top-ranked Virginia baseball team opened the 2014 season Friday afternoon with an 8-3 loss to Kentucky in the Hughes Bros. Challenge in Wilmington, N.C. UK used a four-run fourth inning to rally from an early deficit in earning the season-opening victory.

    The Cavaliers had baserunners in every inning but were limited to five hits while leaving 11 runners on base, including six in scoring position. UVa was 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. (read more)

    No. 15 Virginia Opens ACC Play with 1-0 Win over Virginia Tech

    Sept. 12, 2014
    The No. 15-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team opened ACC play with a 1-0 victory over Virginia Tech Friday evening in front of 5,430 fans in a Commonwealth Clash match at Klockner Stadium. Scott Thomsen (Jr., Brick, N.J.) scored in the 74th minute to lift the Cavaliers (3-1, 1-0 ACC) to the victory.

    Virginia is unbeaten in its last nine matches against Virginia Tech. (read more)

    No. 15 Virginia Downs VCU, 1-0, for Third Straight Win

    Sept. 15, 2014
    The 15th-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team won its third straight match, 1-0, over VCU Monday evening at Klockner Stadium. Sam Hayward (So., Houston, Texas) scored in the 76th minute to push the Cavaliers (4-1) to the win.

    “It’s a great win for us,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “VCU is an NCAA playoff team and they’re one of the better teams that we will play all year. We knew it was going to be a good game. After our emotional game on Friday night, I think in the second half tonight we ran out of gas a little bit. I thought we regained our composure after the first 20 minutes of the second half, especially around the time of the goal.” (read more)

    No. 7 Virginia Plays No. 5 Notre Dame to 1-1 Draw

    TThe No. 7 Virginia men’s soccer team rallied for a 1-1 draw against Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at Klockner Stadium. Playing a man down, Virginia (4-1-1, 1-0-1 ACC) scored in the 68th minute on an Eric Bird (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) goal on its way to earning a point in the ACC standings.

    “Given the circumstances of playing down a man for the final 45 minutes, I think we did great,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “When we went down a goal, we had to push for a goal and I think we did that. From there we just needed to make sure we were selective in our opportunities and not concede and I also think we did that. We did a great job of defending.”

    Second-Half Rally Lifts Davidson to 2-1 Win over No. 2 Virginia

    The second-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team dropped its first home match of the season, 2-1, to Davidson Wednesday evening in rainy conditions at Klockner Stadium. Virginia (4-2-1) scored in the first half, but Davidson (4-0-2), ranked 20th nationally by Soccer America, recorded a pair of goals just over seven minutes apart early in the second half and then held off the Cavaliers’ late charge.

    Virginia out-shot Davidson, 15-10, including 9-4 in the second half. UVa put seven shots on goal to five for the Wildcats. Davidson goalkeeper Matt Pacifici saved six shots, while UVa goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell (Fr., Todd, N.C.) made a pair of saves. (read more)

    No. 2 Virginia Drops 1-0 Match at No. 18 Syracuse

    The No. 2-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 match at No. 18 Syracuse Saturday night at SU Soccer Stadium. It marked the second straight defeat for the Cavaliers (4-3-1, 1-1-1 ACC), while Syracuse (8-1-0, 2-1-0 ACC) claimed its fourth consecutive victory as well as its eighth shutout in nine matches.

    Syracuse scored off a Julian Buescher corner kick in the 31st minute as Skylar Thomas headed the ball home for his first goal of the season. It marked the first first-half goal that Virginia has conceded this season. (read more)

    Madison Lifts No. 19 Virginia to 2-1 OT Win Over James Madison

    Sept. 30, 2014
    Darius Madison (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa.) scored the equalizer late in regulation, then headed in the game winner in overtime to lift the No. 19 Virginia men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over James Madison Tuesday night at Klockner Stadium. Trailing for over 70 minutes, the Cavaliers (5-3-1) scored with 1:32 remaining in the second half on Madison’s first goal of the season, then won it on Madison’s golden goal with 3:13 left in overtime.

    “With the character to come back from the fatigue and everything we’ve been through, and Darius getting his first goals (of the season), that was a great win,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “What a way to do it, to win it for our team, but also for him to get his confidence going.” (read more)

    No. 19 Virginia Rolls Past Pitt, 3-0

    The No. 19 Virginia men’s soccer team rolled to a 3-0 win at Pittsburgh Saturday evening at a brisk Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh. Virginia (6-3-1, 2-1-1 ACC) moved into a tie with Notre Dame atop the ACC Coastal Division at the midway point of the conference schedule with the win.

    Virginia dominated the possession battle and scored a season-high three goals while the defense recorded its fourth clean sheet of the season. Todd Wharton (Jr., Glen Allen, Va.), Darius Madison (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa.) and Nicko Corriveau (So., Potomac, Md.) each scored for the Cavaliers, while Scott Thomsen (Jr., Brick, N.J.) recorded a pair of assists.     The 14th-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team pulled out a 1-0 win at George Mason Tuesday evening in front of 3,003 fans in rainy conditions at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va. An Eric Bird (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) second-half goal proved to be the difference as Virginia (7-3-1) won its third straight match, despite playing with just 10 men for the final 14 minutes.

    No. 14 Virginia Blanks Duke, 1-0

    The No. 14 Virginia men’s soccer team recorded its fourth straight win Saturday, downing Duke 1-0 in ACC play at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers (8-3-1, 3-1-1 ACC) posted their third straight shutout and now have held their opponents for the last 350 minutes of game action.

    Eric Bird (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) scored in the 13th minute, and UVa goalkeeper Calle Brown (R-Sr., Leesburg, Va.) stepped up with some key saves down the stretch to propel the Cavaliers to the victory. (read more)

    No. 3 Virginia Uses Two Walk-Offs to Sweep Boston College

    The No. 10 Virginia men’s soccer team saw its late rally fall short in a 2-1 defeat at Clemson Friday evening at Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C. Virginia (8-4-1, 3-2-1 ACC) had its four-match win streak snapped as the Cavaliers conceded multiple goals in a game for just the second time this season.

    No. 22 Virginia Rolls to 3-0 Win Over Radford

    The No. 22 Virginia men’s soccer team scored three second-half goals in a 3-0 victory over Radford Tuesday evening at Klockner Stadium. Virginia (9-4-1) tied its 2014 match high with its three scores while ending an 11-game unbeaten streak for Radford (9-3-2).

    “I thought we played very well in the first half and we created at least two good chances,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “Then the way we started the second half I would say the result was inevitable. I felt like we would wear them down and get a goal. Sometimes when you score that goal, there is a bit of a letdown, and I think for us today, from start to finish, there was no letdown. They were never really in the game. I think we did a really good job of keeping them out of the game.” (read more)

    No. 22 Virginia Falls to Wake Forest, 2-1

    The No. 22 Virginia men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Wake Forest in front of 3,146 fans Friday on Senior Night at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers (9-5-1, 3-3-1 ACC) played with 10 men for the final 61 minutes after defender Wesley Suggs (R-Fr., Bowie, Md.) was sent off with a red card.

    Despite being down a goal and a man for most of the match, Virginia scored the equalizer on a Patrick Foss (So., South Riding, Va.) goal in the 81st minute, but Wake Forest (9-6, 4-3) countered just under two minutes later on Jon Bakero’s game-winning goal. (read more)

    No. 21 Virginia Draws No. 6 North Carolina, 1-1

    The No. 21 Virginia men’s soccer team and No. 6 North Carolina played through a pair of overtime periods to a 1-1 draw Saturday evening at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. The match marked the regular-season finale for both sides; UVa finishes the regular season at 9-5-2 (3-3-2 ACC), while the Tar Heels, winners of seven straight matches coming into the game, conclude at 12-4-1 (5-2-1 ACC).

    Virginia Ousts Virginia Tech from ACC Tournament, 1-0

    Virginia defeated Virginia Tech, 1-0, Wednesday evening in a first-round match in the ACC Men’s Soccer Championship at Klockner Stadium. Todd Wharton (Jr., Glen Allen, Va.) scored on a penalty kick in the 55th minute as the eighth-seeded Cavaliers (10-5-2) advanced to play in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Sunday against top-seeded Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Virginia and Notre Dame played to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 21 in Charlottesville.

    “We got through it and got the win and now we get a good, proper three-day rest,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We are very familiar with Notre Dame, as they are with us. It should be a great game.” (read more)

    Virginia Falls to Notre Dame in ACC Quarterfinals, 3-0

    The eighth-seeded Virginia men’s soccer team lost 3-0 to top-seeded Notre Dame Sunday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2014 ACC Soccer Championship at Alumni Stadium in Notre Dame, Ind. The Fighting Irish (11-4-3) advance to face Clemson or Wake Forest in the semifinals Friday in Cary, N.C.

    Virginia (10-6-2) now will await its NCAA tournament fate. The field of 48 teams will be announced Monday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on NCAA.com. (read more)

    Bird, Wharton Named to All-ACC Team

    Virginia’s Eric Bird (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Todd Wharton (Jr., Glen Allen, Va.) each have been named to the 2014 All-ACC Men’s Soccer Team, released Thursday by the conference office. Bird notched first-team honors, while Wharton was a third-team selection. In addition, Jake Rozhansky (Fr., Germantown, Md.) earned a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team.

    The Virginia men’s soccer team upset top-seeded Notre Dame, 1-0, Sunday evening in the third round of the NCAA tournament at Alumni Stadium in Notre Dame, Ind. The No. 16 seed in the field, Virginia (12-6-2) got an 82nd-minute goal from Nicko Corriveau (So., Potomac, Md.) to advance to face No. 8 seed Georgetown at 1 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 6) in Washington, D.C.

    The Virginia men’s soccer team advanced to its second straight NCAA College Cup after winning a penalty-kick shootout, 5-4, against No. 8 seed Georgetown Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 NCAA Championship. The Cavaliers silenced the Shaw Field sellout crowd of 2,232 with a Todd Wharton (Jr., Glen Allen, Va.) equalizer in the final minute of the second half, and the two sides played to a 1-1 draw following two overtime periods.

    The No. 16-seeded Cavaliers move on to play unseeded UMBC next Friday (Dec. 12) at 5 p.m. in the semifinals of the NCAA College Cup in Cary, N.C. UVa is making its 12th NCAA College Cup appearance – fifth-most in Division I history. (read more)

    National Champions! Virginia Downs UCLA in PKs for Seventh National Title

    The Virginia men’s soccer team earned the NCAA championship over UCLA Sunday afternoon following a penalty-kick shootout in front of 8,015 fans at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. After the teams played 110 scoreless minutes, Virginia (14-6-3) won the shootout, 4-2, to earn the program’s seventh national championship. (read more)
