DURHAM, N.C. – The third-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team used a total team effort and 6-0 runs at the beginning of both halves to defeat ACC rival and #7 Duke 13-3 in rain-soaked Durham today. Nine different ‘Hoos scored in the rout, with Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) and Mia Mooney (Penn Valley, Pa./Shipley) both notching two goals and an assist to lead the Cavalier attack. Goalie Heather Castle (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) anchored the stingy Cavalier defense by making nine saves on the day and keeping the Devils out of the cage for the first 28 minutes of both halves.

The Cavaliers opened up with a goal from senior captain Kara Ariza (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) three minutes into the contest. Mooney and Samm Taylor (Springfield, Va./Robinson) then each scored a goal in a 21-second span to put Virginia up 3-0 halfway through the first period. Mooney was assisted by Hook and Taylor was assisted by Kelly Allenbach (West Chester, Pa./W. C. Henderson). After the Duke timeout, Mooney and Taylor struck again five minutes later on a pair of unassisted runs at goal to put the Cavaliers up with just under nine minutes to go. Defensively, Castle stopped all five of the Blue Devils’ free position attempts to keep Duke scoreless. Virginia, however, converted an 8-meter when senior captain Peggy Boutilier (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country) continued her scoring streak with a goal with five minutes to go.

The Blue Devils finally got on the board when Kate Soulier connected on a Tricia Martin pass with just under two minutes to go in the first half. Duke scored again 35 seconds later when Kristen Lonergan had a quickstick goal from Martin to cut the deficit to 6-2 at the half. The Cavaliers were able to control the first half thanks to an 8-1 edge in draw controls.

But the Cavaliers started their second-half 6-0 run with a quickstick goal of their own as Hook shoved a Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) into the back of the net seven minutes into the second stanza. Allenbach converted a free position four minutes later to give the Cavaliers an 8-2 lead with 18:21 left.

The patient Cavalier attack then held the ball for the majority of the second half without pressing until the seven minute mark. Virginia then scored three goals in a two-minute span, as Jess Hull (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) converted a free position and Lacey Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored on a crease challenge a minute later. Hook scored after Duke was called offsides a minute after that to put the Cavaliers up 11-2 with just under five minutes to go.

Boutilier gave the Cavaliers a 10-goal lead with just under two minutes left in the game, but the Devils answered quickly with their only goal of the half as Soulier and Martin hooked up again on a free position play with 1:37 left. Hull scored her second goal with an assist from Mooney with five seconds left.

Defensively Virginia was led by Hook’s six ground balls while Boutilier and Taylor both scooped up five. Taylor had five caused turnovers to lead the Cavaliers while Elwell added three caused turnovers. Taylor also had three draw controls. Hook’s assist was her tenth, which places her second all-time at Virginia for assists as a freshman. Mooney’s goal continued her streak of 13 consecutive games in which she has scored a goal.

The Cavaliers host the 1998 ACC Tournament Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 18-19. Virginia awaits seeding as Duke, Maryland, and Virginia all ended the regular season at 1-2. UVa, regardless of seed, will play at 3:00 on Saturday, April 18.
