CHARLOTTESVILLE–A number of University of Virginia athletic department employees who work in University Hall are scheduled to move back into the building next week. The process is scheduled to begin on Monday (Oct. 26).

University Hall — which houses UVa’s basketball arena, locker rooms, storage space for sports equipment for more than 20 teams, and offices for about 50 athletic department officials — was closed unexpectedly by University officials on Aug. 12 after a routine inspection of the 33-year-old building revealed 32 broken cables in the metal tension ring that anchors the roof to the walls.

On Aug. 28, University officials received a preliminary summary of results from an engineering analysis of broken wires taken from the University Hall roof support structure. The report reassured officials that the building could be safely repaired. Repair work began on Aug. 31.

Not all of the employees who work in University Hall will return to the building next week. The Virginia athletic ticket office and the Virginia Student Aid Foundation (VSAF) will continue to work from trailers in the Onesty Hall/Cage parking lot adjacent to University Hall until Nov. 16.

The UVa men’s basketball team plays an exhibition game with the Aussie All-Stars in University Hall on Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. The Virginia women’s basketball team plays an exhibition game with a Hungarian team on Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
