CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – North Carolina sophomore shortstop Brian Roberts went 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run, two RBI and two stolen bases to lead the Tar Heels to a 6-5 victory over the University of Virginia baseball team. Virginia falls to 15-10 overall and 1-8 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while North Carolina improves to 20-8 and 5-1 in the ACC.

Senior outfielder E.J. Anderson (Mechanicsville, Va.) led the Cavaliers by going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBI. Freshman second baseman Hunter Wyant (White Hall, Va.) went 3-for-4 with a stolen base, while senior outfielder Ted Kinsman (Vienna, Va.) was 2-for-2.

North Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Roberts doubled and came in to score on an RBI groundout by Jarrett Shearin. The Cavaliers responded with two runs in the bottom of the second, the first coming on a solo home run by Anderson to center field, his fourth on the season. Sophomore shortstop Tim LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va.) then walked, moved to third on a single by Wyant and came in to score on an RBI single by Kinsman.

The Tar Heels tied up the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning, as Shearin reached on an infield single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Virginia came back to take a 4-2 lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Wyant singled and eventually scored on an error, while sophomore designated hitter Luis Giraldo (McLean, Va.) was hit by a pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Brian Sherlock (Medford, N.J.).

North Carolina would again tie the score in the top of the fifth inning, as Rob Miano drew a walk and Roberts hit a two-run homer to left field. The score remained tied until the seventh, when the Tar Heels plated two runs to take the lead for good. Roberts singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and came in to score on a sacrifice bunt by Richie Grimsley. The other run was scored by Shearin, who walked and came in on an RBI single by Ryan Earey. The Cavaliers final run came in the bottom of the seventh, when senior first baseman Ryan Gilleland (Forest, Va.) reached on an error and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Anderson.

Derrick DePriest picked up the win for the Tar Heels, improving his record to 3-1 on the season. DePriest allowed only one earned run on eight hits in 7-2/3 innings of relief, while striking out five. LaVigne took the loss for the Cavaliers, allowing two runs on four hits in four innings of relief with seven strikeouts.

Virginia and North Carolina will continue their three-game series with a 2:00 p.m. game tomorrow, Mar. 28.
