Cavalier Wrestlers Compete at Carolina Open

Chapel Hill, N.C.- The Cavaliers sent a portion of the squad down to Chapel Hill to compete in the Carolina DeWalt Open, and Steve Garland (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) came back to Charlottesville with a third place trophy. Garland went 5-1 on the weekend, losing only to the eventual champion in the semifinals.
Garland won his first match in a major decision and his second with a technical fall. He won the third place bout with a 3-1 defeat of Brad Byers of UNC.
Toby MacDonald (Venice, Fla./Venice) also competed for the Cavaliers at 133, going 0-2.
Cartney Curnuck (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) competed at 157 for Virginia, advancing to the semifinals and finishing in fourth place. He won his first two matches in falls.
Jeremy Wilkins (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) also competed for the Cavaliers, going 1-2 on the weekend, notching a fall in the first period in his win.
Virginia will compete in Las Vegas this weekend at the Las Vegas Invitational, Friday, Dec. 4 and Sat., Dec. 5.
