CLEVELAND – The University of Virginia’s wrestling team has concluded its 1997-98 season at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Cleveland. Virginia’s Matt Roth (Wescosville, Pa./Parkland) won his first round match in the consolation bracket over Doug Schwab from Iowa 11-9 before falling to Shawn Ford of Arizona State 9-5.

Other Cavaliers also won their first round consolation matches before bowing out in the second round of consolations. Steve Garland (Middletown, NY/Middletown) defeated James Butera from Harvard 7-4 before falling to Chuckie Connor of North Carolina 9-0. Jim Harshaw (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) defeated RJ Galioto from Seton Hall 3-1 and then lost to Jeff Whalen from Maryland 7-3. Alex Leykikh (West Hartford, CT/Hall) faced a pair of Pac-10 wreslters as he defeated Oscar Wood from Oregon State 6-3 and then fell to Matt Suter from Arizona State 4-2. Tom Shaw (Wichita, Kans./Derby) also won his first round consolation match with a defeat of Davion Peterson of Purdue.

The Cavaliers have concluded their 1997-1998 season.
