College Park, MD – Virginia’s Jim Harshaw (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) recorded a technical fall at 174, starting Virginia’s run of 20 consecutive team points to help the Cavaliers defeat the Terrapins 23-13 in College Park.
After the Cavaliers went down 7-0 following Terrapin decisions at 157 and 165, Harshaw notched a17-1 defeat of Chad Masemer to put the Hoos on the board. Ryan McGrath (Blairstown, N.J./Blairstown) then decisioned Bill Moore 5-3 to give the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish at 8-7. Craig Fenstermaker’s (Hilton Head, S.C./Northampton (Pa.)) pin of Mike Tomaino at 3:55 in the 197-pound bout gave the Cavaliers a 14-7 lead, and Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) and Matt Roth (Wescosville, Pa./Parkland)both scored decisions over their opponents to put the Cavaliers ahead 20-7 after seven bouts.
The Terrapins made a charge with victories at 133 and 141, but John Pozniak (State College, Pa./State College) closed out the match for the Cavaliers with a 6-2 decision over Ted Harlan at 149 to give Virginia the final score of 23-13.
With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 8-5-1 overall and are 2-2 in the conference. Virginia returns home for the final dual match of the season on Saturday, Feb. 20. The match against the Clarion Golden Eagles will take place in Memorial Gymnasium at 7:30 Saturday night. Clarion
