Cavaliers Knock Princeton from Ranks of Unbeaten 9-4

April 3, 1998PRINCETON, N.J. — Cavalier senior captain Peggy Boutilier (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country) scored a career-high five goals to help push the Cavaliers past previously unbeaten and second-ranked Princeton 9-4. Boutilier added five ground balls and three caused turnovers as she frustrated the usually high-scoring Tiger offense into scoring a season-low four goals. With the win, the Cavaliers have now defeated Princeton three consecutive times.
Boutilier scored the first two goals of the game on drives from the top of the arc in the first three minutes of the game, forcing Princeton to call a timeout. But Virginia struck next, six minutes later, on a free position goal by senior captain Beth Potter (Swarthmore, Pa./Ridley) to put the Cavaliers up 3-0. On the ensuing draw, Princeton gained control and raced downfield and scored, putting the Tigers on the board.
But the Cavaliers, patient on both attack and defense, settled down and controlled the ball, with Potter assisting on the fourth goal to Jess Hull (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) halfway through the first period to put Virginia up by three again at 4-1. Princeton was not done, however, as the Tigers scored on a quickstick shot with seven minutes to go in the first period to cut the deficit to two.
But Boutilier closed the door on the Tigers with the final three goals of the period, starting with a third dodge from the top just 41 seconds after the Tiger goal. With that goal, Princeton switched goalies in an effort to curb the Cavalier attack. Boutilier, however, was not daunted and converted a free position with just over four minutes remaining in the first half. The Cavaliers again controlled the ball and did not press until the final 15 seconds of the period. Again Boutilier was given a free position which she converted with nine seconds left in the first half to give Virginia a 7-2 halftime lead.
The Cavaliers came out strong in the second half, playing a patient attack and possessing the ball for the majority of the time. Potter notched her second assist of the day with a goal by Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) three minutes into the second half.
With a six-goal lead, the Cavalier defense continued to frustrate the Tiger offense, forcing the Tigers to commit nine turnovers. Virginia’s Samm Taylor (Springfield, Va./Robinson) led the way for the Cavaliers, notching three caused turnovers and scooping up five ground balls. Senior captain Kara Ariza (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Virginia goalkeeper Heather Castle (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame) had three saves on five Tiger shots, helping to stifle the Princeton offense.
Princeton made a brief run halfway through the second period as the Tigers scored on a breakway with just over 15 minutes to play and then added a second goal less than a minute later on a charge from the top. But the Cavalier defense stood strong and kept the Tigers out of the cage the rest of the day. Mia Mooney (Penn Valley, Pa./Shipley) scored in her ninth consecutive game with a goal from Taylor with 17 seconds to go for the final score of 9-4.
The win was the Cavaliers’ third win in three years over the Tigers and the defense held the Tigers to their lowest scoring total in the entire series with Virginia. It was the largest margin of victory by either team in the last six games dating back to 1993.
Virginia continues its season with a game against Villanova on Saturday in Villanova. The Cavaliers return home on Wednesday, April 8 to face the Dukes of James Madison. Game time is 3:30 pm.
