DURHAM, N.C.–The Cavaliers claimed three ACC individual championships but it was not enough as Virginia finished second at the 1998 ACC Wrestling Championships held at Duke on Saturday, March 7. Senior Jason Mutarelli (N. Catasauqua, Pa./N. Catasauqua) won his second ACC title with his victory at 134 today while Jim Harshaw (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) successfully defended his title at 150. Alex Leykikh (West Hartford, N.C./Hall) claimed his first title at 158.

The Cavaliers were strong throughout the weights, as sophomore Steve Garland took runner-up honors in 118 and Matt Roth took a third place at 126. In addition, both Tom Shaw (Wichita, Kans./Derby) and Martius Harding (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) were runners-up at 177 and 190, respectively.

Virginia also qualified six wrestlers to compete at the NCAA tournament in Cleveland, Ohio, on March. All three champions and the three runners-up advanced to the tournament. Other wrestlers might still receive at-large bids to go to the tournament that will be announced later.
