BETHLEHEM, Pa. –The University of Virginia women’s cross country team finished sixth out of 39 teams while the mens team placed 14th out of 42. Jams at the 25th Lehigh University Paul Short Run. Jamie Sutherland was the top UVA womens finisher and placed fourth overall in the team race with a time of 17:20.33. Matt Illian paced the Virginia mens race with 118 points followed by West Virginia’s team with a 17th place finish in a time of 24:17.11.

Cornell won the women’s race with 118 points followed by West Virginia (159), North Carolina (178), Idaho State (181), James Madison (195) and Virginia (198). Virginia placed all five of its scorers in the top third as Ellen Dwyer finished in 33rd (18:00.73), Frances Warner placed 41st (18:10.49), Jennifer Owens finished 51st (18:16.92) and Dana Coons placed 69th (18:27.48). rances Warner (41st), Jennifer Owens (51st) and Dana Coons (69th).

In the women’s open division, Virginia’s Sarah Folse placed seventh (18:37.19), followed by Dawn Cleary in eighth (18:42.93), Kathlene Meehan finished 18th (18:58.26), Megan Schwartz finished 20th (19:02.30) and Susan Kozub placed 21st (19:02.71).

In the men’s team results, Michigan and Michigan State tied for first with 90 points, followed by Georgetown (145), James Madison (183), Princeton (186) and Navy (212). Individually for Virginia, Bobby Thiele placed 22nd (24:21.32), Rick Davis placed 83rd (25:07.15), Thomas Del Sordo finished 110th (25:27.63) and Damond Cromer finished 111th (25:28.09).

In the men’s open division, Virginia’s Bill Palmer finished 32nd (25:42.13) and teammates Jeff Binggeli placed 55th (26:06.51), Ben Apfelbaum placed 64th (26:16.81), Stephen Gross finished 75th (26:23.90) and Matt Day placed 89th (26:36.25).

The team returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 16 in the IC4A/ECAC Championships at Van Courtandt Park in New York City. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
